Day 64: Sugar crystals

Day 64 of #365 Creative #Ideas to do with your kids: Ever made sugar crystals?

Ingredients:
1 cup water
3 cups sugar
clean glass jar
pencil
string (do not use nylon string)
pan
(optional) food coloring

Directions:
Tie the string to the pencil. The string should be able to hang into the jar without touching the bottom or sides.
Boil the water in a pan. It is best for adult supervision when kids are using the stove.
Stir in the sugar one spoonful at a time.
Add a few drops of food coloring if you want to add color to the crystal.
Pour the solution from the pan into the clean glass jar.
Balance the pencil (with the string tied to it) on the lip of the jar and let the string dangle into the solution without letting the string touch the sides or bottom of the jar.
By the next day the sugar crystals should start forming on the string.
When they stop growing or are big enough, take them out of the jar and let them dry.
